Chapter 40

Bronski was on the phone when his two colleagues entered the squad room, mid morning. He looked puzzled as they went to their desks and waited for him to finish his conversation.

‘Last time I looked it was Saturday. What are you two doing here?’ he asked as he put the phone down.

‘Thought you’d like some company,’ Ellison remarked, switching on his computer. ‘Besides I need to finish filtering these helpline calls. I also need to search the databases about Judge Tremont. This could all be about a grudge.’

‘That would fit more with both of them being kidnapped, I guess. It’s looking more like that the longer they’re missing,’ Bronski commented before he turned to face Annie. ‘What’s your excuse, Macpherson?’

Annie smiled as she too switched on her desktop machine. ‘Well I haven’t exactly got much of a social life here, Sir. I offered to help Detective Ellison.’

Bronski gave her a knowing look.

Ellison got up and walked over to Annie’s desk. ‘These are the helpline messages. Could you sift through them and see what we need to follow up on?’

‘Sure,’ Annie replied, taking the stack.

‘I’m presuming Laura Tremont hasn’t used her bank either in the last few days,’ Bronski asked his colleague, as he returned to his desk.

‘No I checked yesterday and I also talked to the branch manager again. She’s holding the payment to Gary Nickelsen until we know what’s happening.’

Bronski appeared deep in thought. ‘If this is all about a grudge, maybe there’s not ever going to be a ransom demand, maybe…’

‘Let’s not go there yet,’ Ellison responded immediately.

An hour later, Bronski got a duty phone call. Hanging up he addressed his colleagues. ‘I’ll deal with this and then maybe check out one or two of the other licence plates. Patrol are keeping an eye out for them, aren’t they?’

‘Yeah, but I haven’t heard anything back yet. When I’ve worked through these databases, I might do one or two more myself before the end of the day.’

Bronski lifted his jacket off the back of the chair. ‘I don’t expect to see either one of you here tomorrow. I’ll call you if anything comes through that’s relevant. Also we better bring the captain up to date on Monday.’

‘I’ll arrange that,’ Ellison replied, as Bronski turned and left the room.

A half hour later, Annie interrupted him. ‘I’ve got through all the messages now. I’ve got three piles: ones I think we need to ring for more details; ones that are bizarre, yet may need checking and ones that need to be noted. Want me to start ringing some of the ones that need it.’

‘Let’s get some lunch first.’
